PRESS RELEASE

June 24, 2016 - The Embassy and the Consulate General of Cabo Verde in the United States have

the honor of formally announce the upcoming official visit of His Excellency Jorge Carlos de

Almeida Fonseca, President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, to the United States of America, from

July 07 to July 12 this year. President Fonseca intends with this visit, to continue his regular

contacts with the emigrant communities.

Highlights from the Program – from Community standpoint, include a Gala Dinner to be held on

Saturday, July 9, during which the Cabo Verdean Head of state will recognize a group of citizens

who distinguish themselves in various areas of activity, contributing in exemplary manner for the

good name of the Cabo Verdean community in the United States.

On Friday 8 July, a group of young people of the city of Brockton will pay tribute to President

Fonseca with a Cultural Dinner at the Restaurant "Santana" of that city and, on Sunday, July 10,

several thousand participants of Rhode Island Cape Verdean Independence Day Festival will have

the opportunity to listen the President's message, the historic Fox Point.

The political and diplomatic part of the program shall include a courtesy visit to the Governor of

Massachusetts (MA) and a reception at the State House, organized by Senator Vinny DeMacedoand State Representative Evandro Carvalho, both of Cabo Verdean origin, marking the 41 anniversary of the Independence of Cape Verde.

In the State of Rhode Island (RI), President Fonseca is also planned to meet with the Governor and other elected officials who stand out in their relationship with the Cabo Verdean community of this State and Cape Verde.

During this visit, Jorge Carlos Fonseca will be accompanied by an important delegation, which

includes, among others, the new Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities, Dr. Luis FilipeTavares.

24 de Junho de 2016 - A Embaixada e o Consulado Geral de Cabo Verde nos Estados Unidos, têm a honra de anunciar formalmente a próxima visita oficial de Sua Excelência Senhor Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca, Presidente da República de Cabo Verde, aos Estados Unidos da América, de 07 a 12 de Julho do corrente ano. Com esta visita, o Presidente Fonseca pretende dar continuidade à sua agenda de contactos regulares com as comunidades emigradas.

Do Programa – vertente comunidade, destaca-se o Jantar de Gala a ter lugar no Sábado, 9 de Julho, durante o qual o Chefe de Estado cabo-verdiano vai condecorar um grupo de cidadãos que se distiguiu em várias áreas de actividades, contribuindo de forma exemplar para o bom nome da Comunidade Caboverdiana nos Estados Unidos.

Na Sexta-feira dia 8 de Julho, um grupo de jovens da Cidade de Brockton, homenageará o Presidente Fonseca, com um Jantar Cultural no Restaurante “Santana” daquela Cidade e, no Domingo, dia 10 de Julho, vários milhares de participantes do Rhode Island Cape Verdean Day Festival, terão a oportunidade de ouvir a mensagem do Presidente da República.

A parte político-diplomática do Programa incluirá, nomeadamente, uma visita de cortesia ao Governador de Massachusetts (MA) e uma recepção no State House, organizada pelo Senador Vinny de Macedo e pelo Representante Estadual Evandro Carvalho, ambos de origem caboverdiana, assinalando o 41º Aniversário da Independência de Cabo Verde. No Estado de Rhode Island (RI), o Presidente Fonseca tem, igualmente, previsto encontrar-se com a Governadora e com outros eleitos oficiais que se destacam no seu relacionamento com a comunidade caboverdiana desse Estado e com Cabo Verde.

A Familia de Armando Maria da Silva Spencer,

Foi com muito pesar que, na Embaixada de Cabo Verde em Washington DC, tomamos conhecimento do falecimento do Sr. Armando da Silva Spencer, talentoso desportista Caboverdiano, primeiro como futebolista e, em seguida, como treinador de varios clubes de futebol nas comunidades Lusa e Caboverdiana, principalmente em Massachusetts e em Newark. Destacamos tambem o seu activismo social junto de jovens e da comunidade Caboverdiana em geral.

Assim, em nome dos membros da Embaixada e em meu nome pessoal queria apresentar as mais sinceras condolências e simpatia a familia enlutada, bem como a todos os que, nesta hora de tristeza, sentem a perda de um ente querido.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Mr. Armando da Silva Spencer, a talented Caboverdian athlete, first as a soccer player, and then as a coach in various soccer clubs in the Luso and Caboverdian communities in Massachusetts and in Newark in particular. We would like to highlight also his social activism amongst youth and the Caboverdian community in general.

On behalf of the Embassy staff and on my own behalf, I would like to offer our deepest condolences and sympathy to the grieving families as well as to all that, in this time of sorrow, feel the loss of a loved one.

20th Anniversary Celebration of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP)

The embassies of Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Portugal, and Timor-Leste participated on May 12th, 2016, in the celebrations of the International Portuguese Language Day and the 20th anniversary of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

At the event, which took place took place at the Embassy of Portugal in Washington DC, guests had the opportunity to visit the exhibit "The Economic Potential of the Portuguese Language" organized by the embassy of Portugal as well as an arts and crafts exhibit by participating CPLP countries. The guests later enjoyed music performances, poetry recital, as well as a reception showcasing the gastronomy of the Portuguese-speaking world.

Teve lugar no passado dia 12 de Maio, na embaixada de Portugal em Washington DC, as comemoracoes do Dia Internacional da Lingua Portuguesa e dos 20 anos da Comunidade dos Paises de Lingua Portuguesa (CPLP), organizadas pelas embaixadas de Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Mocambique , Portugal e Timor-Leste.

Neste evento os convidados tiveram a oportunidade de visitar uma exposicao organizada pela embaixada de Portugal "O Potencial Economico da Lingua Portuguesa ", bem como uma exposicao de artesanato dos paises da CPLP. Um concerto de musicas lusofonas, recital de poesia, e mostra gastronomica dos paises da CPLP tambem fizeram parte das comemoracoes.

Alberta continues to meet the challenges of the wildfires currently burning in the province. The Fort McMurray fires have affected well over 80,000 people, and a mandatory evacuation of the city has occurred. A number of evacuation centres have been set up around the province to provide evacuees with shelter and other necessities, and many other people are staying with family and friends. The fires continue to burn out of control, but major efforts are being made to contain the fires and ultimately extinguish them.

We are aware that you may have nationals who have been working and living in the Fort McMurray area. If you are contacted by someone asking for assistance, or know of someone impacted by this event, please advise them that ALL evacuees (whether they are staying at hotels, in campgrounds or with family or friends) need to register by calling the Canadian Red Cross at 1-888-350-6070 or online at RedCross.ca. This will ensure officials know how to reach them and verify their safety. Evacuees staying at reception centres can register with reception centre staff.

Family members and evacuees trying to reunite can also contact the Red Cross. Please note due to high call volumes, they may not be able to reach someone right away.
