Gala Dinner and Cultural Evening with Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves

The Prime Minister of Cabo Verde, H.E. Jose Maria Neves, will attend a Gala Dinner and Cultural Evening in Swansea, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 26th, 2015 in recognition of 40 individuals and organizations of the Cabo Verdean community. Funds raised will benefit the Cabo Verdean community in Sao Tome e Principe.

The First Lady of Cabo Verde, H.E. Ligia Fonseca attends the 2015 Africa/US Women Leaders Forum in New York City

The First Lady of Cabo Verde, H.E. Ligia Fonseca, will be the Keynote Speaker at the 2015 Africa/US Women Leaders Forum organized by African Horizons and taking place September 27-28 in New York City.

African Horizons is an important forum for women policy makers, scholars and business leaders gathering and exchanging ideas about one of the most dynamic economic region of the world-Africa. This Summit provides meaningful coverage on current trends in the dynamic economies of African countries as it relates to the United States Economy.

The emphasis this year is to highlight Africa women’s potential to grow and the complex issues still troubling the region’s economy. The forum intends to explore the role of women in regionalism and America’s role within Africa’s economies, Africa’s’ increasing capabilities as the world emerging market and in several other areas that will prove to be the cornerstones of tomorrow’s economy.

The 2015 forum focus on women, going by the theme of the forum “Exploring Frontiers: Confronting Challenges and Breaking New Ground” .

The First Lady will deliver her keynote to the women of Africa/US and the world in general and she will also receive the "Outstanding Leadership Award 2015".

Cabo Verde joins the Open Government Partnership (OGP)

The Ministry of Foreign Relations informs that, by a decision of the Government, and in a letter sent on July 13, 2015 Cabo Verde requested to join the Open Government Partnership (OGP).

Launched in 2011, the OGP is a multilateral international initiative whose objective is to globally disseminate and encourage government practices related to government transparency, access to public information and social participation. With more than 60 member countries, the OGP's goal is to ensure that governments are more open, efficient and responsible, and they make concrete commitments which promote government transparency.

It should be recalled that it was during Prime Minister Dr. Jose Maria Neves' visit to the United States of America in 2013 and during a meeting with President Barack Obama that the idea of Cabo Verde joining this important Institution which promotes worldwide democracy was brought about.

This membership makes Cabo Verde the 66th country to join the Open Government Partnership.

Global Diaspora Week (GDW)

The Global Diaspora Week (GDW) which this year runs from October 11 – 17, 2015, is a week dedicated to diaspora communities and their contributions to global development. GDW is intended to create awareness, enable collaboration and enhance learning amongst those working with diaspora communities in different locations around the world.

GDW enables an inclusive and focused series of events – events that are self-driven and self-organized by diaspora communities and other interested groups. With diaspora communities and organizations at the reins, GDW spotlights the organizations and initiatives themselves, the work they do and the issues that they feel are important. Anyone—individuals or organizations—can participate in Global Diaspora Week, whether hosting a formal conference or meet up at a coffee shop, attending an event, and everything in between.

GDW is held annually to create awareness, enable collaboration and enhance learning amongst those working with diaspora communities in different locations around the world.

The 2015 GDW will provide a platform to showcase exemplary initiatives in international development and diplomacy by diaspora communities around the world, highlight paths to success for diaspora engagement, and allow for collaboration between the public and private sectors and civil society.

Statement by the Government of Cabo Verde on U.S. and Iran Nuclear Agreement

The Government of Cabo Verde learned of the Agreement between the United States, China, Russia, Germany, France, United Kingdom, European Union and the Islamic Republic of Iran which took place on July 14, 2015 and whose ultimate goal is to ensure that Iran's nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes, making it an important contribution in strengthening the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty.

The Government of Cabo verde is convinced that this Agreement, which represents a significant change in the way nuclear-related issues and the use of nuclear energy are approached, opens up great prospects for the prompt handling of these issues at a global level and with direct and positive results for peace and international security.

Therefore, the Government of Cabo Verde congratulates all the countries directly involved in the negotiations for reaching a deal and encourages them to continue to make efforts in order to take this process to a successful conclusion.
